Lincoln's Emancipation Proclamation: law and liberty in the time of war

Guelzo unfolds the context of the Proclamation in American law and the 'law of nations' as it existed in 1863, and argues for the essential power of the Proclamation as document of liberation, and of political prudence.

Allen Guelzo is Henry R Luce Professor of the Civil War Era and professor of history at Gettysburg College.
